EDUCATION

Our Physical Education curriculum inspires students to embrace lifelong physical, social, and emotional well-being. Delivered by experienced specialists, our inclusive programme develops confidence, competence, and character through engaging lessons, personalised training, and access to outstanding facilities.

The Physical Education (PE) curriculum at Wemms Education is designed to align with the National Curriculum framework, offering a progressive, inclusive, and engaging learning experience. It builds on foundational skills, helping students become confident and competent in a variety of physical activities. The curriculum emphasises fostering healthy, active lifestyles, character development, and values such as tolerance, fairness, and respect.

Students benefit from at least two hours of high-quality PE each week, delivered by experienced specialists. The curriculum includes sport-specific units, fitness modules, and personalised training options to meet individual learning needs. Opportunities extend beyond lessons to extra-curricular clubs, competitions, and community sports. Facilities such as a sports hall, therapy pool, and all-weather Astroturf further enhance the learning experience.

Assessment is integral to shaping future learning, with both formative and summative methods in use. The impact of PE at Wemms is demonstrated through high levels of engagement, progress across key stages, and a lifelong enthusiasm for physical activity. Students’ achievements are celebrated through events like Sports Day, assemblies, and inclusive sporting opportunities, fostering a love of PE and promoting physical, social, and emotional well-being.

PE at Wemms adheres to the National Curriculum framework and aims to provide continuity of learning experience by building on and embedding the physical development and skills learned in lower KS2.  With students becoming more competent, confident and expert in their techniques, and applying them across different physical activities.

As a result, students look forward to their PE lessons. We offer a broad and varied curriculum that will encourage participation and inspire our pupils to lead healthy active lifestyles that supports our academic courses in KS4.

Students are motivated to be physically active for sustained periods of time and develop the confidence and interest to get involved in exercise, sports, and activities outside of school and later in life. Further to this, students are given a variety of opportunities to participate in community sports, inclusive competitions and other activities beyond the curriculum to build character, and cooperation and help to embed values such as tolerance, fairness and respect.

Students are encouraged to analyse their work and understand what makes an effective performance and how to apply these principles to maximise progress and experience joy and success.

Through the activities, we teach students to be healthy, not just physically but socially and emotionally as well.  The PE curriculum is routinely adapted to meet the needs of our students, developing their skills and abilities via an incremental programme suited to individual needs.

All students are always taught by qualified and specialist PE staff and is assisted by the curriculum provision at both KS3, KS4 and as a choice at KS5. This is further supported by the large number of students that are involved in involved in the PE department’s extra-curricular provision, competitions, Leadership Programme and Inclusive Sports events.

The department enters a varied list of sporting events and festivals at Local and Borough level with the students being provided with a range of opportunities to participate in competitive sports, inclusive events and lifestyle activities.

We celebrate PE during our annual Sports Day. Additionally, the PE department celebrates our student’s successes and achievements in assemblies.

PE is highly inclusive at Wemms’ and impact can also be further measured in feedback from pupil voice interviews which supports that student value and enjoy Physical Education lessons at Wemms.

Students are taught the skills and knowledge to enjoy and succeed in Physical Education and this can be seen in the delivery of all lessons throughout the department. The impact of both the PE curriculum and its extra-curricular provision at Wemms engenders high engagement in all lessons, develops significant progress across the Key Stages and enthuses high participation levels through the school’s rich diet of extra-curricular provision, with staff outside of the department becoming increasingly eager to contribute. This ensures that we have done all in our power to ensure that students have a lifelong involvement in Physical activity to lead a Healthy, active lifestyle post 18 and life after Wemms.

All students receive at least 2 hours of high-quality Physical Education a week from highly qualified and experienced subject specialists, with students.  All students take part in Core PE as part of their school curriculum, from Year 4 through to Year 11.

Students follow a broad and balanced curriculum to support the curriculum intent identified above.  In KS3 students work on sports specific units lasting no more than 8 lessons at a time.  With teachers routinely model tasks and use expert questioning techniques to develop students’ understanding.

The specific aim is to improve the quality and range of skills across a variety of activities. This is also enhanced with other activities such as fitness modules and other sports that students can access in extra-curricular clubs and in the wider local community.  This offer is continually reviewed to enhance the development of students at Wemms.

Throughout KS3 students are taught in small groups for PE and all lessons are planned to challenge individuals and ensure they work at the correct pace to suit their learning needs.  Students are provided with an option of personal training where they receive 1-to-1 teaching and coaching based around their interests.

Assessment within the department is designed to shape future learning.  Formative and summative assessment is used to gauge how well students are learning the content outlined in the curriculum.

At KS4 students continue to follow a broad curriculum designed to further engender encouragement to participate in Sports and Physical Activity for lifelong physical, social and emotional wellbeing. The PE curriculum is coherently planned and sequenced to ensure that every child has access to the statutory areas of the PE National Curriculum regardless of ability or gender.  This sequencing is modelled around access to our ever-improving facilities including a Sports Hall, Therapy pool and All-Weather Astroturf.
